The Week Junior x Griddle Bakery

Back-to-school breakfast should be many things: quick, easy, delicious… and, if you ask us, it should be exciting too.

For our back-to-school campaign, we teamed up with The Week Junior Magazine and asked their brilliant young readers to get creative: draw your dream back-to-school waffle. 

We were looking for colourful, delicious and imaginative ideas - the kind of breakfast that makes getting out of bed for school that little bit easier, whilst setting them up for the busy school day.

We received nearly 200 entries, from budding artists as young as four all the way up to 14-year-old budding recipe designers. The artwork was incredible, and we were blown away by the thought, creativity and imagination that went into each idea.

There were waffles covered in gems and stickers, waffles doubled, tripled, quadrupled up and layered into towering stacks, and waffles transformed into school buses and bags. There were a surprising number of animals and cats.

Tropical waffles were having a moment, too. Several of you named your creations ‘Tropical’, with mango, passion fruit and lychee making a number of appearances. When it came to fruit, though, the humble berry was the clear favourite. The real upset of the competition was Biscoff. It beat Nutella. It beat the nut spreads. Nobody saw that coming, least of all Nutella.

And our winners are…

A huge congratulations to brothers George and Henry, who took home the prize of a month’s supply of Griddle Bakery wholegrain waffles (with some French Toast, Griddle toaster tongs, and a newspaper full of breakfast ideas added to the mix too).

What stood out about George and Henry’s entry was the thought behind it. They weren’t just thinking about what would make their waffle look and taste amazing - they had thought about how all the ingredients, from the Griddle waffles to their toppings, could help their bodies and brains get set up for the school day.

A little something for everyone

You all put so much imagination, creativity and hard work into this competition, and we wanted to say a very big thank you. So, to everyone who picked up a pencil, grabbed some stickers, dreamed up a waffle stack or simply imagined the breakfast that would get them through the school gates: thank you for entering. There’s a free pack of our wholegrain toaster waffles on its way to you.

Over the next few weeks and months, we will continue to share some of the ideas submitted. They say children are the toughest food critics, but after seeing these entries, we think they might also be some of the best breakfast inventors too.
